Classic Looks, Electric Power
The Renault 5 is back, Fiat have taken the Panda back to its roots, and the Ford Capri has returned in a rather different form. Familiar names are finding their way into a new generation of electric cars.
For anyone who enjoys older cars, there’s plenty to take an interest in. Some manufacturers have stayed close to the original design, while others have taken a few more liberties.
Renault 5
Renault have kept plenty of the details that made the original recognisable, including the shape of the rear lights and those squared-off proportions.
There are some clever new touches too. On selected versions, the ‘5’ on the bonnet acts as a battery charge indicator. It’s a small detail, but rather more interesting than another badge.
The result is a small electric hatchback with a bit of personality. Even if you never owned the original, there’s plenty to like about the design.
Fiat Grande Panda
Fiat have looked back to the original 1980s Panda for inspiration. The upright shape and boxy styling are still there, although the Grande Panda is bigger and comes with a choice of electric or hybrid power.
There are some nice details, including the PANDA lettering pressed into the doors and the pixel-style headlights. It’s a fairly bold design for an everyday car, and all the more interesting for it.
The original Panda had a simple, practical appeal. This one has considerably more equipment, but you can still see the family resemblance.
Ford Capri
Ford have taken a different approach. The Capri name returns on an electric SUV coupé, quite a change from the low-slung two-door many people will remember.
There are references to the old car in the design, but this is the biggest departure of the three. Anyone hoping for an exact remake will have to adjust their expectations.
It does give a familiar name another chapter, even if the extra doors and higher roofline take some getting used to.
