What is a PHEV?

EV – Electric Vehicle

Uses solely electric power sourced from on board battery charged by plug

 

BEV – Battery Electric Vehicle (as above)

 

PHEV – Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Uses Electricity and on board combustion engine usually petrol. Can be plugged in to charge or charged from engine. This term is not exclusive to Mitsubishi and is available in Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, BMW and there will be many others over the next year.

 

REX – Range extended Electric Vehicle

Uses electricity charged via a plug but has a small “charging engine” to recharge the battery. The drive though only comes from the battery and electric motor unlike PHEV which the engine can also turn the wheels as well as charge the battery if needed.
